Case: Moving house notice! [25 Nov 2012|09:22am]
/ mood | content \

This post will stick around at the top of my journal, hopefully acting as a signpost!

I will no longer be using this livejournal as my fandom journal. Honestly this is not much of a jump for me; everything I write for my current fandom has been posted both to FFnet and DW. So I will no longer be RE-posting those fics over here, which shouldn't be a problem since anyone actually interested in reading them is already following one of those other locations.

I will not be deleting the journal, so everything that's on here will stay, and I will continue to use it to keep up with my friends on LJ. But this does mean that memes, filks, contests and other fandommy things will no longer get posted here! If you are interested in these things, please find me at dreamwidth:

http://mikkeneko.dreamwidth.org/

Or if you're here for the Loki-fic, find me on fanfiction.net:

Or even on AO3!

Case: Relationship meme! [22 May 2012|01:34am]
Crossposted.

Character Relationship meme!

I'm reviving this meme, but with a slight twist: Instead of asking me about one specific character, ask me about a relationship. It doesn't have to be a romantic or sexual relationship (although it can be;) any two people who know each other and have a history. Kurogane+Syaoran, Fai+Sakura, Yuuko+Watanuki, anything you like... and I will tell you my Thoughts On Yaoi Relationships.

Name me a pair of characters from one of my fandoms (GW, TRC, or FMA), and I will tell you:
* How I feel about their relationship
* The high point and the low point of their relationship
* My unpopular opinion about their relationship
* One thing I wish would happen / had happened with these two in canon
* Something about them I consider true, though it's just head canon
* A ficlet (~100 words) of them having a quiet moment together

Fire away, although as per usual I add the disclaimer that if I think you're trollin' me (say, asking about Muraki and Tsuzuki from Yami no Matsuei) I will decline to fill the prompt.

Case: A confession - and an apology [01 Apr 2012|12:33am]

I've maintained this journal (and its predecessor on LJ) for a very long time, and I consider many of you my friends as well as loyal readers. So I thought I owed it to you to come clean, to let you know what I've done, and why.

I know that many of you greatly admire the fics I've written over the years, both in the FMA fandom and in TRC. I know that many of you first befriended me on the basis of these fics, and that you have been waiting eagerly for regular updates. I hate to have to admit to those people that this has all been a lie. Those stories were never written by me. I stole them from an origi-fic author and internet blogger aletternotread (you can go to her story page shortly to compare, if you want to.) All I did was to find-replace the names of her characters with fandom characters, and republish under my own name.

I can't really excuse what I've done. I was young, and I wanted attention, but I didn't have any story ideas of my own. I found this author I really admired, and it seemed to me a waste that she was just writing original fics that nobody would ever read, that she would never have any chance of publishing. I hoped that if I turned them into fanfics (and sometimes, turned the female characters into male characters so the relationship would be more yaoi) then they would be able to reach a wider audience.

aletternotread , I know I can never make up to you for what I've done. All I can say is that I'm sorry. And I'm sorry to all my readers and friends, too. It's been hard, over the years, keeping the secret and pretending that these stories were really mine, but I was too addicted to the attention and praise to stop. I know that the guilt is no more than I deserve. It's been a long journey since I was that insecure teenager, and the license plate said fresh and there were dice in the mirror. If anything, I could say the cab was rare. I looked at my kingdom, I was finally there, to sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Aire.

Case: [TRC] (Midseries) The Missing Worlds (7/12) [17 Nov 2011|11:41pm]

Third world! Air world, Fai's world. This is also where the story starts to take a darker turn. And, to be honest, this was the part I was really interested in writing this fic for; my primary concern for the first two worlds was keeping myself interested enough with the kids' problems without boring either my audience or myself to sleep.

The Missing Worlds - Castle In the Air I
Rating: PG-13
Spoilers: This story is set in the uncertain period after Piffle World, but before Recourt; in other words, in the same never-neverland that the second season of the anime mostly took place in. This means that Fai has not yet learned to whistle, Syaoran is still the original Syaoran, and nobody knows anything about Kurogane's childhood.

Summary: An argument, and a peaceful little town.

From the edge of the floating island, a small river tipped over to pour into a beautiful crystalline waterfall, splashing into a lake below to slowly wend its way through the city.Collapse )

Case: [TRC] (Midseries) The Missing Worlds (6/12) [15 Nov 2011|11:49pm]

This whole arc, and especially this chapter, was very exhausting for me to write. I was trying to imitate the hectic, fast-paced style of Barry Hughart in Bridge of Birds, and while I didn't quite get to that level, a number of readers commented that they noticed and enjoyed the change in style. Which is good that they liked it! But the fact remains that it was pretty grueling.

Summary: A daring heist, and an unexpectedly familiar encounter.

Despite himself, Kurogane couldn't help but admire the artistry of Xiao Lang's bullshit.Collapse )

Case: [TRC] (Midseries) The Missing Worlds (5/12) [13 Nov 2011|02:14am]
Of the four worlds they visit, this one is the most tenuously connected to any fairy tale. It's got a little bit of "The Man with the Lump," (a traditional Chinese fairy tale,) a little bit of "The Moon Princess," and a little bit of "The King's Lettuce." But I feel that Xiao Lang is enough of a trickster archetype that he could sub into almost any fairy tale. :p (I feel certain that the trick with the sack with nothing in it has been used in fairy tales before, but I can't recall which offhand.)

Summary: A web of plotting, scheming and lies.

Author's Notes: I'm not trying too hard with any of the alters' names. 'Tideflower' was just a local translation of 'Sakura,' since they probably don't have cherry blossoms underwater. 'Xiao Lang' is nothing more than the pinyin rendering of this character's Chinese name, 'Little Wolf'. (For anyone who reads Holitsuba, Syaoran's twin brother was given the name Xiao Long, which means Little Dragon, and was one of martial artist Bruce Lee's childhood nicknames.)

In order to properly honor the spirit of his sword, a warrior of Yamato is required to slaughter at least one person per day, and I'm afraid to confess, brave noble sirs, that he has not had the opportunity to meet an enemy in combat since breakfast this morning.Collapse )

Second world. This is alter-Syaoran's world, the Earth world. Each of the worlds has an elemental association as well (as I consider each of the characters to have one, and not the one that was given to them in the Hanshin arc. :p)

Summary: Ancient China as it never was.

A shepherd was minding his own business there one day when the heavens opened up with a crack of thunder, brilliant light streamed down on an otherwise cloudy day, and a white feather with delicate black markings floated down to him from the sky.Collapse )

More Author's Notes:

The second world they visit is China - or more specifically, "Ancient China as it Never Was," based on the series of books by author Barry Hughart starting with Bridge of Birds.

The colorful character of Li Kao as well as the setting of China and much of the style of storytelling is borrowed from Hughart's books. If you liked Li Kao and would like to read more about him, be sure to check out his and Number Ten Ox's adventures in Bridge of Birds. If you didn't like him… well, read them anyway, because they're much better than my poor attempts at imitation!

Case: [TRC] (Midseries) The Missing Worlds (3/12) [11 Nov 2011|11:22pm]

Honestly, I just like this chapter because it gave me an excuse to use the word "cuprous" in context.

I love it when I cross a section of prose which calls up an obscure vocabulary word I hardly knew that I even knew (like 'atavistic') or use an obscure word in its PROPER context (like 'pristine.) If I can make my readers look up a word, that's awesome -- but if they DON'T have to look up the word, cos the meaning is obvious in context, that's even awesomer!~

Summary: The travelers face the evil at the heart of the vortex, and what kind of a lame power is Heart, anyway?

The shadowlike serpents fled from her, hissing and scuttling off to the side; one that clung tenaciously to Syaoran's side, fangs dug stubbornly into his tunic, was punished with a sound whap of her powerful copper tail.Collapse )

Author's Notes: Yeah, Princess Tideflower is eighteen; Syaoran just jumped to conclusions about her age. And yes, that means that this version of Sakura is kind of a derp. Well, when you're part fish, you do the best you can

Case: [TRC] (Midseries) The Missing Worlds (2/12) [10 Nov 2011|12:01am]

I mentioned when I started posting that I had planned this fic in part in response to the dearth I perceived of fics where the travelers meet alters of their own selves. Another very common theme I noticed when reading a lot of fics in this fandom is fairy tale themes, and so each of the worlds they visit here is (vaguely) modeled after a fairy tale as well. The first one, of course, is The Little Mermaid.

Author's Notes:
In addition to the breathable air of the world of Chelestra - which also has the magic-blocking properties Mokona describes here - I also modeled this world partly on the underwater zone of Vashj'ir.

Case: [TRC] (Midseries) The Missing Worlds (1/12) [09 Nov 2011|11:52pm]

The water world is modeled on the world of Chelestra, the third world in the Death Gate Cycle. In that world, the entire world was a globe of water (no rock core at all, unlike this world) with floating seasuns and seamoons to provide light and heat and a solid place for people to live. A pocket of air surrounded the seamoons, but the water itself of that world was also breathable. The protagonist of that series, when he got dumped into that world, experienced a moment of OMGWTFBBQ similar to Syaoran's. XD

Case: [TRC] (Midseries) The Missing Worlds (Prologue) [07 Nov 2011|01:07am]
I'm starting to lose track of what I have and haven't posted to LJ. Sigh.

I thought I'd posted this long ago, since chronologically it's set mid-series and I posted all the other in-series works first. But I must have put it off because it was in-progress (the same reason I still haven't posted any of Heralds, and why I waited on Family Portrait until I was able to post the final chapter.)

So here we go: The Missing Worlds.

This was a fic that I first started plotting out very early in my time in the fandom, but actually writing it has been a very slow endeavor, since other projects kept getting in the way. I was surprised, when reading through fics in the fandom, at how few stories actually have the characters meet alternate versions of themselves in the worlds they travel through. There are a few, but I would have expected more, and most of them use the alter-selves as a plot device rather than exploring them in depth. So I wanted to write a story that plays with the idea of how the characters might have turned out in alternate dimensions, and how the others in the party would react upon meeting them (without the usual meeting-myself awkwardness getting in the way!)

Missing Worlds has a gorgeous illustration done by the amazing konnichipuu; you can see it here at her account on DeviantArt.

Title: The Missing Worlds - Prologue
Rating: PG-13
Spoilers: This story is set in the uncertain period after Piffle World, but before Recourt; in other words, in the same never-neverland that the second season of the anime mostly took place in. This means that Fai has not yet learned to whistle, Syaoran is still the original Syaoran, and nobody knows anything about Kurogane's childhood.
Summary: While searching for Sakura's feathers, the travelers face a dilemma: in order to move on to the next world, they will have to leave one of their companions behind. What will they find in the new worlds now open to them, and what will happen to the one who stays behind and waits…?
Pairing: Although this fic has both Syaoran/Sakura and Kurogane/Fai (in later chapters,) it is not intended to be a pairing-centric fic; although the relationships are part of the story, they are not the main focus of it.

Did any of you ever wonder why it is that you have never encountered alternate versions of yourselves?Collapse )

BABIES! Actually, this part of the process usually kinda sucks. For anyone who doesn't feel like sorting through the prose, that's forty hours, which from reports I hear is not all that unusual.

Title: Family Portrait

Author's notes: Li Yelan is a cameo from the Card Captor Sakura universe; in that universe she is Li Syaoran's mother, a very powerful mage and all-around very intimidating lady.

Case: [TRC] Ill Luck part III - Family Portrait (3/5) [11 Oct 2011|11:01pm]
One thing I wanted, while writing a story about a character getting pregnant, was to avoid all the inevitable cliches about pregnancy that inevitably show up in fiction. You can always tell that a female character is pregnant if they start feeling nauseous in the mornings -- in fact, it's never anything else! And much is made of the emotional swings that come with the hormone rushes, and the strange food urgings are all a source of great hilarity. Unfortunately, since I ended up not actually covering much of Tomoyo's pregnancy, I didn't really get a chance to avert the stereotypes. Oh, well.

Idioglossia - or "twin speak" - is a real phenomenon, although experts are divided as to whether it can be considered a real separate language or not. Either way, idioglossia tends to be most advanced and developed in instances where twins are neglected as children and left to speak exclusively to each other, which Fai and Yuui definitely were.
